Technology Lending Services

Are you lacking computer or wi-fi access at home, or do you need it on-the-go? The Library lends out Chromebook laptop computers and Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspots!

  • Chromebooks are laptop computers that run on the Chrome operating system. You can search the internet, create and store documents with Google Workspace, and use Zoom. They include a webcam.
  • Mobile wi-fi hotspots are used to connect your laptop, smartphone, tablet or game console to the internet. Hotspots are portable and allow you to access the internet wherever you are.

Please review the following important information, then visit the Adult Services desk to borrow these items. Contact us at 908-322-5007, x204 with any questions.

Chromebook Lending Policy

  1. A Chromebook can be checked out by a SPPL resident card holder who is 18 years of age or older AND in good standing. The cardholder must present current I.D. and proof of address (i.e., a driver’s license or current utility bill) and sign a new Lending Policy and Agreement each time a Chromebook is borrowed.
  2. The Chromebook can be checked out for a maximum of 14 days with no renewal.
  3. The Chromebook must be returned inside the library during normal library hours and must be given directly to Adult Services desk staff when returned. DO NOT leave the Chromebook outside of the library, in the library’s lobby, unattended at any library desk, or deposited into the book drop.
  4. The overdue fine for the Chromebook is $10.00 per day. Please be aware that library staff must check multiple aspects of the Chromebook before accepting it back. In addition, all materials contained in the Chromebook bag must be present for the item to be considered returned. If it is overdue 14 days or more, the full replacement cost for the Chromebook ($350) and charger ($30) will be charged to the borrower.
  5. Borrowers must return the Chromebook and all accompanying materials in good condition. When borrowing the Chromebook, patrons accept full financial responsibility for it and its accessories while in their possession and understand that they shall be responsible for all costs associated with damage to, loss of, or theft of the Chromebook or its parts during the period it is checked out. The condition of the returned Chromebook will be determined by SPPL staff.
  6. The Chromebook may not be loaned to anyone other than the borrower who signs the agreement with the library.
  7. Please treat the Chromebook with care, keeping it in a clean, dry, in a dust-free place and safe from liquids, extreme temperatures, and from being dropped.
  8. Users may not add or remove apps, download any programs, or change the configuration of the Chromebook in any way. If the user logs into a Google account while using the Chromebook, instead of using it as a “guest”, that account must be removed before returning the Chromebook.
  9. The Scotch Plains Public Library reserves the right to refuse borrowing privileges to anyone who abuses the equipment or is repeatedly late in returning the Chromebook or any other electronic equipment.
