Summer Reading Challenges

Our annual Summer Reading Challenges will begin on Saturday, June 1st.

Early Literacy | Elementary | Teens | Adults


Our 2024 Wee Readers Program begins on Saturday, June 1st. It is open to children who are not yet reading or entering Kindergarten. To sign up you must be a Scotch Plains child with a library card OR a child entering the Scotch Plains Fanwood School district. Sign up in person or online.

  • Sign ups begin Saturday, June 1st and end on Tuesday, September 3rd.
  • The last day to sign up for our Summer Reading Challenge is Monday, August 5th.
  • Summer Reading Challenge ends on Tuesday, September 3rd. and all prizes must be redeemed by the closing date.
  • Children earn a prize after completing 15 minutes of reading, attending a library program or completing an early literacy activity 5 times. After completing the entire board they are eligible for a free book. All prizes and items are as supplies last.
  • Children can only participate once per summer and are eligible for a total of 5 prizes and 1 free book.
  • Prizes must be redeemed at the Scotch Plains Public Library.


Our 2024 Elementary Summer Challenge begins on Saturday, June 1st. It is open to children entering grades Kindergarten through Fifth during the 2024-2025 school year who are enrolled in the Scotch Plains Fanwood School District OR reside in Scotch Plains. Sign up in person or online.

  • Sign ups begin Saturday, June 1st and end on Tuesday, September 3rd.
  • The last day to sign up for our Summer Reading Challenge is Monday, August 5th.
  • Summer Reading Challenge ends on Tuesday, September 3rd. This is the last day to pick up any prizes and to enter to try to win any of our bonus raffle prizes. Prizes are as supplies last.
  • Children must complete 5 different challenges in order to earn a prize.
  • Prizes must be redeemed at the Scotch Plains Public Library.
  • All prizes (excluding raffle winners) must be redeemed before or on Tuesday, September 3rd before the library closes at 5:00pm.
  • Children can only participate once per summer and are eligible for a total of 5 prizes and are eligible for 1 raffle ticket.
  • Raffle winners must pick up their prize by Monday, September 30th. If prize is not redeemed then winner will forfeit their prize and another winner will be selected.


Scotch Plains residents and SPF students entering grades 6-12 are welcome to participate in our teen summer reading challenge. Teens earn raffle tickets for reading and for attending library events. Visit our teen summer reading page to learn more.

  • The teen summer reading challenge runs from 6/1 through 8/18. Pre-registration opens on 5/13. 
  • Track your reading time in the Beanstack app or website. For every 2 hours of reading (or 120 points) you’ll earn a raffle ticket. 
  • You may also earn points toward raffle tickets by attending our summer events for teens (30 points per event). 
  • Each teen can earn a maximum of six raffle tickets. 
  • Raffle tickets must be entered into the raffle(s) of your choice (via Beanstack) by Sunday, 8/18. Winners will be drawn and notified on Monday, 8/19. 
  • ALL READING DONE BETWEEN 6/1 AND 8/18 COUNTS! Assigned reading, graphic novels, audiobooks, fiction, nonfiction, poetry… Track it all to earn more tickets faster! 
  • Every teen who earns 720 points (12 hours of reading or a combination of reading + event attendance) by 8/18 will receive a free brand-new book to keep.

Scotch Plains adult cardholders are invited to take part in our Adult Reading Challenge. Fill out our online form for every book you read this summer (through September 3). Each book logged is an entry in our summer reading raffle, which includes a gift certificate to a local business. Be sure to check out our events calendar for fun and informative programs.
