Chessie Dentley, Student of the Month is a picture book inspired by the life of Chessie Dentley Roberts, who grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey. When she was less than satisfied with simply sitting back and receiving a second-rate education, Chessie stood up and demanded change. Chessie’s story is a great conversation started about the restrictions in the North that were meant to deter African Americans from having career options.
