Introduction to FlightRadar24
Thursday, January 26 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Have you ever wanted to know what just flew over your house? Or do you watch planes and wonder if they’re travelling to far-off or remote destinations? Flightradar24 is a global flight tracking service that provides you with interactive, real-time information about thousands of aircraft around the world.
The surprising thing about Flightradar to me is that it triggers my imagination… What are people up there on that plane doing? Are they on vacation? On business?
–Susan Dibble, The New York Times
Started in 2006 by two Swedish aviation enthusiasts, today the Flightradar24 website and app are viewed by 1 million users a day. Its fans include travelers, airlines and airports, news organizations, aviation hobbyists, and daydreamers!
Flightradar24’s director of communications Ian Petchenik will join on us on Zoom to talk about how the service got started–and how it now tracks over 180,000 flights a day by combining data from numerous sources. He’ll also show us how important world events are often reflected in air traffic, and cover some of the more interesting flights that were followed by users all over the world.
Ian Petchenik’s love of aviation began at an early age growing up next to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. As Flightradar24’s director of communications and co-host of the AvTalk podcast, Ian now gets to share that passion for aviation with millions of Flightradar24 users and listeners around the world.
Flightradar24 is free to use on the web or with the app. It does offer subscription options that provide additional features of interest to professionals.
