History Evening: How Manifest Destiny Divided a Nation

February 6 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join us on Thursday, February 6 at 7pm for a look at a neglected but critical era of our nation’s history—the turbulent decades preceding the Civil War.

Lithograph titled, 'Across the Continent: "Westward the Course of Empire Takes its Way"'
“Across the Continent: ‘Westward the Course of Empire Takes its Way'”, 1868, by Frances Flora Bond Palmer, James Merritt Ives, Currier and Ives.

Professor Jason Martinek of New Jersey City University will discuss the profound impact of Manifest Destiny—the idea that the country was destined to expand across the continent.  While the nation relentlessly acquired territory, existing tensions escalated as the question of whether to allow slavery in the new territories resisted resolution.

Scotch Plains Redevelopment Coordinator Thomas Strowe will contribute a segment on the largely-forgotten president Zachary Taylor, examining the impact of his sudden death in office at this time of escalating national division.

Registration is recommended for this program.
