Commodore Reigart B. Lowry

Thursday, July 7, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for a special perspective on U.S. naval history!

From a young age, Scotch Plains resident William McClintock was intrigued by the large collection of letters and other documents left by his great-great-grandfather, Commodore Reigart Bolivar Lowry. He spent hours going through these documents which led to further research and ultimately, his book.

Lowry joined the U.S. Navy when he was 14 years old, and served until his death.  He was at the scene of most of the important events of the Navy over that 40 year period.  He fought in the Mexican War, went to Japan with Commodore Perry, and was in a ship off of Fort Sumter when the first shots of the Civil War were fired.

After the Civil War, government corruption increased, and politicians tried to gain more influence in the Navy.  Lowry fought against these influences, and in the final year of his life led the fight against a fellow naval officer who was trying to take advantage of this atmosphere.

This book is a story about the struggle of a man against political influence and corruption, and it is also a story about the man himself and the Navy in which he served.
