Dr. Clement A. Price, New Jersey’s preeminent public historian leads a bus and walking tour of Newark.

Our Cities, Ourselves — A Series at the Scotch Plains Public Library.

Join us to explore New Jersey Cities and Their Place in Our Lives, Past, Present and Future. April 8 – May 12, 2011

We launch the series on Friday, April 8th, as Dr. Clement A. Price, New Jersey’s preeminent public historian leads a bus and walking tour of Newark’s landmarks and neighborhoods, just for us. Dr. Price asserts, “The interesting thing about Newark is that in the first two decades of the 20th century about a fifth of New Jersey’s population lived in or around Newark, so all New Jerseyans have a piece of Newark spiritually or through the memories of their forbears.” Our day with Dr. Price will include an optional modestly-priced lunch in one of Newark’s notable restaurants. The tour is free-of-charge except for the cost of lunch. Tour attendance is limited to adults, college and high school students.

The series continues on:

Saturday, April 16, 2 pm –Nelson Johnson, author of Boardwalk Empire, visits to speak about his new book, Northside.

Thursday, April 21, 7 pm — Nationally recognized poet and educator, Maria Mazziotti Gillan, examines the Paterson roots of poets William Carlos Williams, Allen Ginsberg, and their literary heirs. She will discuss the role that the city played in the lives and works of poets and will read from her own poetry and the works of others.

Thursday, April 28, 7 pm — Preservationist John Grady regales the audience with an “Armchair Tour of Plainfield.” Find out about the history and lore of Plainfield’s grand Victorians.

Thursday, May 12, 7 pm — Award-winning historian Thomas Sugrue speaks about Sweet Land of Liberty, The Forgotten Struggle for Civil Rights in the North, including Trenton, Newark, Plainfield, Atlantic City, and Englewood.

We gratefully acknowledge the generous support of the Friends of the Scotch Plains Public Library.

This series of programs was made possible in part by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations in this series do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities or the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
