MLK Day of Service: MLK in Oslo
January 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
As part of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Martin Luther King Day of Service, Social Justice Matters, Inc. (SJM) invites the public to attend this special event. The library will be closed to normal business, and only open as the host site for the program.
SJM will present MLK in Oslo: Drawing Inspiration from Dr. King’s Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech. Doors open at 11:45 am. Attendees will view the 12-minute speech before breaking into small discussion groups, to be followed by one large group conversation. Particular emphasis will be placed on the relevance of Dr. King’s ideas more than a half of a century later. By sharing their insights, participants may inspire each other to think about taking some form of nonviolent action today to improve our community or our world. Refreshments will follow at 1:30.
This discussion will be followed by a public conversation with educational sociologist Dr. Timothy Eatman about Publicly Engaged Scholarship at 2:00pm.
To take part in either program, please register in advance at the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service website. People may also register the day of the event (Monday, January 15) during the 10:00am opening program at the Jewish Community Center in Scotch Plains.
